The migrant journey is long and dangerous. Anthropologists Jason De León and Micheal Wells document some of the challenges migrants face while traveling from Central America to the border.

The US government implemented Title 42 during the COVID state of emergency in the house of keeping COVID cases as low as possible. Title 42 bars anyone from claiming asylum. Despite lifting the state of emergency in several border states, Title 42 is still in place today.

Prevention Through Deterrence, the main US border enforcement strategy, relies on the hostile terrain at the border to deter migrants from crossing by funneling them, many to their deaths, into the most remote areas of the desert.

Humane Border’s Migrant Mortality Map documents the deceased in the borderlands. It is important to note that this map only records reported deaths.

The United States has a set of requirements that must be met in order to qualify for asylum. One these requirements is that those seeking asylum must be on US soil in order to claim asylum.
