The migrant journey is long and dangerous. Anthropologists Jason De León and Micheal Wells document some of the challenges migrants face while traveling from Central America to the border.

Prevention Through Deterrence, the main US border enforcement strategy, relies on the hostile terrain at the border to deter migrants from crossing by funneling them, many to their deaths, into the most remote areas of the desert.

Humane Border’s Migrant Mortality Map was the first of its kind, documenting the deceased in the Tucson Sector. In 2024 a map was released documenting individuals who lost their life in the El Paso sector. Both maps pull from public sources of information.
